Flyer wins 2007 Atlantic Coast Championship |
Date: |
11/20/2007 |
Detail: |
18 NOVEMBER 2007 Bora Gulari at the helm for Chuck Holzman on Flyer played his trumph card today as they took the Melges 24 King's Day | Atlantic Coast Championship title by one point. "This is great," said Holzman. "We come down here every year and we have such a great time, we really enjoy it. The race committee had a very challenging job this year. I'm not sure what was more challenging — being on the committee boat or being one of the race boats, but this was tough." Holzman attributed his entire crew in addition to Gulari — George Peet, Wally Cross and Todd Jones for their success this weekend.
Day two of the 2007 King's Day Regatta | Melges 24 Atlantic Coast Championship was bound to be a showdown. Going into the day, Bill Hardesty at the helm for Dave Ford on Lightwave Nano had the overall lead with a 3-2 first day score over Brian Porter on Full Throttle's 6-1 finish. And to no surprise, Bora Gulari at the helm for Chuck Holzman on Flyer was seated in third.
The teams headed out to the course bright and early on Sunday morning under once again, sunny skies and a light breeze. Just when everyone thought it was just enough to get things going on time, the air bottomed out and the fleet went into postponement.
Race one finally got underway around midday with a great start. As if the deep talent in this fleet wasn't enough to deal with, it was played a great game of breeze and current on the first upwind beat. First to the mark was Cary Siegler on Cre843 with Traverse City's Mike Down on Flying Toaster hot on his heels. As the fleet slowly progressed around the mark, the situation looked grim for the overnight leaders. Hardesty and Gulari/Holzman were furthest front, while Porter and Mark Ivey driving for David Ford on Lightwave Micro struggled desperately in the disappearing air. Downwind the overnight leaders picked up some positions. As the fleet headed back-upwind, with a last minute shortened course, Dow took the win in stride. It was Joe Blouin on Wicked Witch the launched a surprise attack taking second place, Siegler settled for third. Gulari/Holzman was fifth.
Around three o'clock the awards ceremony was held in the Florida Yacht Club's grand ballroom where both overall trophies as well as the top five Corinthian's were awarded. USMCA Southeast District Governor Reid Collins in company with Quantum Sails' Scott Nixon announced the winner of the Southeast Ranking Series — the winner of a brand new Melges 24 jib — Steven Kopf from Charleston, South Carolina on Blur.
A very special thanks goes to Regatta Chair, Henri Mullen and PRO, Rick Preston with the Florida Yacht Club. Another year has passed where you have simply outdone yourselves! Great hospitality and the very best in Melges 24 racing!

Flyer wins 2007 Midwest Championship |
Date: |
10/19/2007 |
Detail: |
2007 is history. Another record year for the Midwest. Eighty-two boats competed in at least one Midwest event. Thirty-two races were sailed over six events. Thirteen boats competed in at least four events.
A interesting thing happened in Lake Geneva this year. Five races with thirty-one boats and every race had a different winner, a different 2nd place boat and 3rd place boat. The event winner Brian Porter and Paul Hulsey in third posted two 4th place finishes.
Winning the Midwest series is Chuck Holzman and Co. on Flyer. Flyer the 2005 and 2006 Midwest champion scores a "three peat" and earns all bragging rights until May of 2008 when we start over. Congratulations! They sailed in every event and outlasted everyone else. Second place went to John Podmajersky, Paul Hulsey and his HooDlum team were third.

Full Throttle wins 2007 Fall Championship |
Date: |

09 OCTOBER 2007 The Melges 24 Fall Championship is the ultimate Midwest showdown and 2007 was nothing shy of a banner year. Thirty-one teams flocked to the grand waters of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin to race five, knock-down-drag-out races against the best of the best — Alan Field, Paul Hulsey, Argyle Campbell, Chuck Holzman, Mike Dow, Marc Hollerbach just to name a few.
Race one brought out nothing but the extreme in the fleet with 2007 U.S. Melges 24 Corinthian Champion owner Holzman shooting straight to the front taking the win, followed by John Podmajersky and Brian Porter taking third. Racing in general was really tough as Peter Wright topped the crop in race two, Field getting a grip on second place, then Hollerbach in third. Another change in the leaderboard was in store for race three, this time August Hernandez stepped out in first, new owner and Corinthian Alex Shafer in second, and in third David Ford. In race four, Field took a drive around the course in first chased by Holzman in second and Campbell finishing third. Campbell caught up in race five to take the top spot followed by Podmajersky, then USMCA Midwest District Governor Mike Dow.
Consistency was the paying dividend this past weekend and the biggest payoff went to newly crowned 2007 Melges 24 U.S. National Champion Brian Porter with two points to spare! Finishing in second overall was Alan Field and in third Paul Hulsey.

The Grind
The picture you see here is Full Throttle and Flyer battling it out for last place during race 1 of this weekend's Melges 24 US Nationals. Despite a horrific start for both boats, you're looking at the new US champion and Corinthian division US champ. Pretty damned impressive. |

| DETROIT September 23, 2007 In yet another day of warm, 8-12 knot breeze, Brian Porters Full Throttle team held off World Champion Dave Ullman, helming Scott Holmgrens Rosebud. We were 1-2 at Worlds, we were 1-2 at North Americans, and now were 1-2 here, with Brian getting the win. Ullman said. Those guys are just so fast and so good theyre always solid. |
Porter's crew included Melges Performance Sailboats President Harry Melges III and VP Andy Burdick, also from Lake Geneva, Wis. We felt like we had a speed edge all weekend. Melges said. Porter was very impressed with the difficulty of the racing conditions. There was just no predictability at all to the wind shifts, the new Champion said. The lake would just fake you out in between regular shifts, and the only solution was speed.

Detroit-based Flyer won the Corinthian division with a phenomenal final-day surge. Flyer, sailed by Chuck Holzman, Bora Gulari, Pat Drummond and Mike Firestone, finally showed the speed thats earned them the reputation as one of the areas top Melges 24 teams. Flyers entire crew collected prizes along with the other top 4 Corinthians and the 5 overall top | |

Flyer Wins Anarchy in the D - Part 2 |
Date: |
8/23/2007 |

Dispite light wind, heavy chop and a threatening line of thunderstorms, we managed to get another five races off today to make a grand total of TWELVE races over two days! Chuck, Bora, Patrick and Mike off of Flyer ended up pulling out the win by the narrowest of margins over Mr. Hulsey and Hoodlum Crew after both teams basically traded off 1st and 2nd place in most of the races. Both teams did a great job this weekend! Full Results are here.
Again - Another huge thanks goes out to Loretta and the rest of the race committee for helping us to pull off another great local regatta! We really appreciate the help!!
The next major event on the Midwest fleet schedule is on Mike Dows home turf (Traverse City). Fleet #32 will be represented heavily! See you there!! Here's the NOR. |

Nice Rack
Drunkslut, Sister Clean, and Wonder Woman improve the scenery while they get ready for a hoist aboard Greg McCliments' Melges 24, Cujo (to leeward) during the second annual "Anarchy in the D" regatta. Greg has fully embraced the philosophy I brought to his program when I was the snacktician - if you're not going to win, you might as well have three fine, bikini-clad racer chicks on board. Cujo's no anomaly in this competitive fleet - of 14 boats racing, 10 had women on board, and four had two or more mammary-clad crew. I had the distinct pleasure of setting the marks. Check out the Midwest Fleet here. Photo by Mer.
Nice Pack
The fleet goes right in 5-6 knots of breeze on Lake St. Clair in the Anarchy Regatta, and somebody is getting awfully dirty under that blanket. Napoleon Dynamite, Drunkslut, Maddog570 and a bunch of other Anarchists created this race last year after (what else) some heavy drinking at the NOODs. They named it after their favorite sailing site, and for the informal, intense format they chose: Quarter-mile legs, no time in between races, with mandatory drinking during the inevitable light air postponement. Anarchy? Maybe not. Mayhem? You bet. Photo by Mer.
Nice Ass
Anarchist Napoleon Dynamite shows that he's a boxer-guy while the fleet waits for the wind to fill. Words escape me

Nice Rock(star)
There aren't too many places that can pull fourteen Melges 24's for an informal race like this one - but they sure did come, and many brought the big guns. Carrie Howe, the USA's best shot at Olympic Gold next year, is shown here, trimming the kite for fleet newcomer Andrew Morrison on GBR 618. They finished fourth, in good company - A point behind was Adam Hollerbach's FU with ABN AMRO 2 veteran George Peet calling tactics. Chuck Holzman's Flyer, with Anarchist Bgulari calling the shots, took the 5-race regatta, with Anarchist Napoleon Dynamite's Hoodlum Racing in third. With that many Anarchists in one class, you can imagine the post-race party.
Don't forget that this year's Melges 24 U.S. Nationals will take place right here at Bayview on September 21-23, with over 50 teams expected from the U.S., Canada, and Europe. I'm helping my brothers get the word out, and I promise - it'll blow your mind. Register now, and maybe we'll get this thing to 60 boats. Photo by Mer.

JOHN PODMAJERSKY WINS THE 2007 MELGES 24 DETROIT NOOD |
Date: |
6/6/2007 |
Detail: |
03 JUNE 2007 The second day of the Detroit NOOD was dominated by Midwest boats — eight of the top ten finishers call the Midwest home! John Podmajersky onboard 'USA-511' from Chicago, Ill. won the 2007 Melges 24 Sperry Top-sider Detroit NOOD by a mild eight points over Friday's leader Mike Dow on 'Flying Toaster' from Traverse City, Mich. Only one point beyond, in third place overall is Jack Jennings on 'Pied Piper' also from Chicago who won the tie breaker for 3rd place from Chuck Holzman on 'Flyer' from Farmington Hills, Mich.
On Saturday, the Melges 24 fleet managed two races despite the continued light conditions. In race two Podmajersky got a jump on the fleet with an almost instant win. Thomas Ritter on 'Tramp' from Bloomfield Hills, Mich. followed Podmajersky across the finish line in second and in third was Chuck Holzman, Bora Gulari, Pat Drummond and Mike Firestone on 'Flyer'.
The third race of the series offered a complete turnover in the standings with Marty Jensen from Charlevoix, Mich. having a spectacular race on 'ZigZag' taking the bullet, Jennings was second and in third was none other than East Grand Rapids' own Ken Gray on 'USA-175.'
Sunday was set to be the showdown between Podmajersky, Dow, Jennings and Holzman, but early on with the forecast predicting severe thunderstorms racing was cancelled leaving Saturday's results as the finals.
